Louisville Ford Dealers Sales Are Up

Louisville Ford Dealers Sales Are Up

It is nice to see any Louisville business doing well.  It is also good to see a Amercian car manufacturer doing well.  So the news that Louisville Ford dealers are doing well is pretty good news in my book.  Lately all we have been talking about are the record sales of the Kentucky Kia dealerships and the Indiana Kia Dealerships, or how the Louisville used cars dealers are paying premium for used cars right now.

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Ford Motor Company released the Cincinnati regional sales marks and it was good news.

The Cincinnati region’s sales, which includes Louisville dealers, rose 16% over one year.

The month of May was Ford’s biggest small car sales month since 2008, and the Ford Explorer brought in the highest sale marks in 4 years.

The national figures for Ford in the month of May were the same as 2010, but the year-to-date sales were 12% higher than last year. (Read More)

I do not want to jump all aboard the Ford is back train right now, one it is too soon, and 2 I don’t really like Fords.  I like ford Trucks, but I am highly skeptical about every other Ford product.

With Gas Nearing $4, Americans Opt for Small Cars

I am pretty sure this fade started about 4 years ago when gas prices were like $50 a gallon, but I guess when the price went down so did consumers desire for economy vehicles. Well gas is back up to disgusting prices, and people are looking to get economy cars again.

Americans are going for smaller cars as gas prices march higher.

New models that get 35 mpg or better, including the Chevrolet Cruze, Hyundai Elantra and Ford Focus, led most major automakers to stronger April sales. Even buyers of pickup trucks chose more efficient engines.

The shift to more fuel-efficient cars was good news for Detroit and Korean automakers, which have plenty of new small cars in stock. But Toyota, struggling with supply shortages since the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, reported weak sales.

Overall, U.S. sales rose 18 percent from April of last year, to 1.16 million. It was the third straight month that sales hit an annual rate of 13 million or more and a big improvement from last April, when consumers were more cautious about the economy and unemployment was even higher.

While sales remain below their peak of 17 million in 2005, the April gains were another sign of recovery for the auto industry and the economy. Just two years ago, Americans bought just 10.4 million vehicles.

As buyers come back to U.S. dealerships, they’re looking to downsize. Geoff Pohanka, who runs 13 auto dealerships in suburban Washington, said buyers are impressed with small cars’ improved design and amenities, like heated leather seats and satellite radio.

“They’re not just an econobox,” he said.

Rising gas prices make small cars more appealing, too. The average price of a gallon this week is $3.96, up $1.06 from a year ago. Gas is already more than $4 per gallon in New England, in the Midwest and on the West Coast.

In 2008, the last time gas prices spiked in the U.S., the industry was caught off guard, said Don Johnson, General Motors’ vice president of sales and marketing. This time, he said, GM and its rivals have good small cars and can increase production quickly.

Even those who choose bigger vehicles are downsizing. Ford said half the people who bought an F-150 opted for a more efficient V-6 engine instead of a V-8. And more than half of Chevrolet buyers are now choosing smaller, four-cylinder engines, the highest level GM has ever seen.

The shift is great for Korea’s Hyundai Motor Co., which said sales jumped 40 percent over last April because of demand for more efficient models like the 40-mpg Elantra. Edmunds.com analyst Jessica Caldwell said Hyundai also offered more deals in April than Japanese rivals, which were concerned about supplies. The Elantra alone outsold Nissan’s Leaf, Versa, Sentra, Cube and Juke combined.

Car shortages from the earthquake have not hit the U.S. but are expected to by the end of this month. On Monday, Honda warned dealers that the 2012 Civic and other models will be in short supply this summer. It also pushed back the fall launch of the CR-V, a small SUV, by at least a month.

Toyota is already feeling the squeeze. The company’s U.S. sales rose just 1 percent in April. Sales of its popular Prius hybrid, which is made in Japan, were flat compared with last April, at about 12,500. In a good month, Toyota can sell around 22,000.

Toyota’s U.S. sales manager, Bob Carter, said the company is starting May with a relatively healthy 47 days’ supply of vehicles. But cars made in Japan are in much shorter supply. The company has just 10 days’ supply of the Prius, for example…. ( keep reading)

It is only a matter of time before gas prices in Louisville, go back down and this article is titled, “Americans looking for gas guzzlers as gas prices plummit”

Make The Most of a Test Drive – Louisville Cars

Say you are really interested in 5 different cars, all different makes and models. Finding the time to drop by each dealership and test drive each car, would just take an absurd amount of time. It would be easy is you could just schedule a test drive with each dealership, but not all dealerships will let you do that, they want to get all your information, before you “waste their time.” Coming sometime this summer to Louisville Car dealerships, will be strutting their stuff in one general area, maybe papa johns stadium, or Freedom hall area. These test drive extravaganzas can be a bit overwhelming, so Edmunds.com has offered some great tips.

It’s not every day that you can test-drive dozens of cars in one place, at one time, without any cost or sales pressure. But from now through the end of the year, drivers have just that opportunity almost every weekend. In an effort to get consumers behind the wheels of their vehicles, at least two automakers — Chrysler and GM — are hitting the road with free test-drive events that don’t take place at dealerships and are blessedly free of sales pitches.

From now through the fall, GM’s Main Street in Motion is bringing more than 100 cars, representing 70 models, to stadium parking lots from California to Florida. In addition to Buick, Chevrolet and GMC brands (including the Camaro, Corvette and the plug-in hybrid Volt), drivers also can test GM cars against other manufacturers’ vehicles, including models from Acura, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan and Toyota. The events have several test-drive courses, auto-show-style car displays and driving video games to entertain the kids.

Chrysler, meanwhile, is taking its test-drive events to shopping centers around the country, inviting drivers to try the 2011 Chrysler brand lineup, including the 2011 Chrysler 200 sedan and convertible, the Chrysler 300 sedan and the Town & Country minivan. Chrysler says each driver will get a $15 shopping mall gift card at the end of the test-drive.

If you’re shopping for a car, or even if you’re just interested in checking out what’s new in carmaker lineups, these events are a good opportunity to try out a variety of models and compare them against their competition — up to a point. Here are some tips on making the most of a test-drive event.

1. Find a test-drive event. This is the easy part. GM is aggressively marketing Main Street in Motion with e-mail and postal-mail invitations and online and print ads. You can also see the upcoming event schedule at the Main Street in Motion Web site. Chrysler says it will update its schedule of shopping-center events throughout the year via its Facebook page. You’ll need to “Like” Chrysler in order to see the event listings.

As marketing budgets recover from the recession, other manufacturers are likely to hit the road to directly court consumers. Although Cadillac is a GM brand, it isn’t part of GM’s Main Street tour. Instead, beginning in early summer, it will resume three by-invitation test-drive events for its models and competitor vehicles, says Steven Haener, Cadillac’s national sales promotion manager. The events are wrapped around three themes: golf, racing and cooking. You’ll need an invitation to attend, although there are some walk-up opportunities for the Cadillac Culinary Challenges, which are held at high-end retail centers, Haener says.

Toyota has taken its hybrid vehicles on a Farm to Table Tour, offering Prius and other Toyota hybrid vehicles for test-drives at farmers’ markets around the country. These are Toyota-only events, however, without competing brands for comparison.

There are several ways to find out about such smaller-scale test-drive events. As with Chrysler, you can “Like” a manufacturer on Facebook, follow it on Twitter or sign up for your favorite make or model’s forum site (manufacturer sponsored or otherwise). The Edmunds Facebook page also highlights events.

2. Register, if you like. Main Street in Motion’s Web site asks you to register for a day and time, and while it might save you some time when you arrive at the event, online registration is not required. Larry Peck, GM experiential marketing manager, says that 30-50 percent of the pre-registered drivers are no-shows. That leaves plenty of room for walk-ups. The Chrysler events don’t require pre-registration. For both events, you just need to be 18 and present a valid driver license.

3. Go on a Friday if you can. Chrysler’s events are only on Saturdays and Sundays, so a weekday visit isn’t an option. Main Street in Motion is a Friday-Sunday affair. The crowds are definitely lighter on Fridays, which means shorter lines and more time behind the wheel.

4. Go early. In addition to shorter lines, an early visit is particularly important at the GM event if you want to drive the Volt. It’s the only way to experience the car in all-electric mode. Event organizers don’t have time to recharge the cars during the day (a full charge takes about four hours on a 240-volt charger), so later arrivals will only be able to drive the car when it’s running on gasoline.

5. Understand the ground rules. These are not performance-driving events. The courses are short, and while there are opportunities to test handling, braking and a moderate amount of speed, don’t go expecting that you’ll be able to do burnouts. One event veteran, posting on Inside Line’s long-term road test blog, put it this way: “If word got out you could do whatever you wanted in the cars, teens and 20-somethings would be flocking there to have fun. They are trying to impress people who might actually have jobs and the income necessary to buy a new car.”

GM also requires you to drive its Cruze before you test-drive a Volt. You’ll need to drive any GM product before you can get behind the wheel of the Camaro or Corvette. GM says this helps with crowd management at the events. (It probably also helps GM get more people into its non-performance cars.)

6. Don’t expect apples-to-apples comparisons. GM is (of course) putting its best product foot forward at these events. While you’ll find its vehicles at several different trim levels, that’s not necessarily the case with the competitor cars. When Edmunds attended the event at Hollywood Park in the L.A. suburb of Inglewood, we found that the non-GM cars ran the gamut in trim levels, from bare-bones base models to higher trims loaded with options. We suggest you use the opportunity to compare the driving feel and interior dimensions, rather than focus on the trim-level variations.

7. Try out all the features and ask plenty of questions. This is your chance to find out everything you want to know about the cars. The sponsor’s product specialists are knowledgeable about its cars and — most importantly — they are not salespeople. Ask them anything from the differences between models to a how-to on operating the stereo. The GM event even had child car seats that could be tested for fit.

8. Expect to do some online research. While there’s plenty of onsite information about GM cars, Main Street in Motion offers nothing about the competitors’ models. Edmunds writer Ron Montoya attended the event in Los Angeles with a friend who wanted pricing details on the 2011 Ford Explorer he had just driven, but there was nothing at hand. Luckily, Montoya had the Edmunds new-car shopping app (for iPhone and Android) on his smartphone and was able to find all the information on the spot. Of course, you can make notes at the show and check online when you get home.

9. Drive, drive, drive. Drive as many cars as you can. Drive cars other than the car you have in mind. Drive a big honking truck, just for the hell of it. If there’s no line, hop in a vehicle and take it for a spin. Manufacturers want you to fall in love with their vehicles. Chrysler brand President and CEO Olivier Francois says that once test-drivers “put their hands on the wheel and their foot on the accelerator,” their consideration for the Chrysler brand will increase.

For its part, GM is targeting its tour on parts of the country where American-branded cars are fighting for the attention of consumers whose default choice is a Japanese or European brand. (There are no events planned for the Detroit area, for example.) Peck says that if consumers try out GM’s offerings, they’ll find they stand up well against such competition. Buick consideration has picked up considerably since the start of the tour, he says.

It doesn’t hurt to test that claim by driving the competition. Even if you think you only want to drive the Chevrolet Cruze, try the Honda Civic and the Hyundai Elantra — and even test a GMC Terrain. You might find that your perfect car wasn’t on your original shopping list.

While no set date is made for Louisville, Ky I would be willing to bet your bottom dollar that the test drive extravaganza will be making a stop here. Most Louisville dealers love the idea so they can show off their vehicles side by side vs their competition…..Ok I just checked the dates and locations of the Main Street in Motion event and I lost your bottom dollar. Sorry.

Top 5 Cars From New York Auto Show – Louisville Cars

Every year you can expect a car at the New York Autoshow to make a splash whose ripples will be felt by all Louisville Car dealerships. This year was no different, as 100 hundres of cars took the stage to strut their stuff, 5 cars made an impact.

1. Hyundai Accent
Hyundai’s overachieving little elves are at it again, and this time they’ve reinvented the Accent, the most affordable car in the manufacturer’s lineup. For 2012 the Accent gets an overhaul that leaves it with traits that seem like a contradiction: It’s the most powerful and the most frugal model in the subcompact segment. Governed by a six-speed manual or manually shiftable automatic transmission, the car’s 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder provides a generous-for-the-segment 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque, while tech like variable timing on both the intake and exhaust cams helps deliver an EPA rating of 30 city and 40 highway mpg.

2. Subaru Impreza
Subaru wants to reach a wider audience with the Impreza and someone over there wisely concluded that giving the model’s fuel economy a nudge in the right direction might help. The new-for-2012 Impreza sedan and wagon boast a new engine (a 2.0-liter “FB”-series flat-4 good for 148 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque) that, says Subaru, improves both mileage and acceleration. Subaru reports 27/36 city/highway mpg for CVT-equipped Imprezas (the CVT replaces the aged automatic tranny), with those figures falling to 25/33 with the five-speed manual. This makes the Impreza the most fuel-efficient all-wheel-drive vehicle on the market — not a bad title to hold in today’s environment.

3. Kia Rio
Wider and lower for 2012, the Rio now shares design cues with the handsome Optima, which, as I see it, is a pretty good thing. Designed in Germany, the car’s cabin promises greater comfort. A new 138-hp 1.6-liter GDI four-cylinder engine is under the hood, mated with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic. EPA ratings aren’t in yet, but Kia expects 30 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. And there’s that low, low, low starting price — we’re talking less than $13,000 for both the sedan and the hatchback.

4. Volkswagen Beetle
VW slips the Beetle some steroids for 2012, increasing its size, lowering its profile and giving it a more muscular stance. Three engines are available: a 170-hp 2.5-liter gasoline five-cylinder, a 140-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder TDI clean diesel and a 200-hp 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged four-cylinder. As far as transmissions go, a five-speed manual or an optional six-speed automatic will be offered on 2.5-liter models, while TDI and 2.0-liter TSI models get a DSG six-speed dual-clutch. The fuel-economy leader of the pack is the TDI model, which gets 29 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway.

5. Chevrolet Malibu
Chevy bucks the “bigger is better” trend that has dominated the midsize-sedan segment in recent years by going smaller with the 2013 Malibu in certain respects; its length has been trimmed, though it does add a couple of inches in width. A new 2.5-liter four-cylinder direct-injected DOHC Ecotec good for 190 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque is paired exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission. Included in the lineup is the Malibu Eco, which weds a gas engine with a small lithium-ion battery and electric motor to achieve highway mileage of 38 mpg.
